I really wish that they hadn't even been invented right now. I know that they helped end WWII with Japan but look at all the destruction they cause.
And North Korea has threatened to blow up the U.S. Do they have the technology to fire long-range enough to reach from West to East Coast? The government officials say that they can't reach Hawaii, yet Hawaii is on high alert. We have defensive systems, but have they faced a threat such as this before? No. I think that the problem is the unknown. We've never faced true nuclear warfare. Just seeing the bombings of the past (and those were just A-bombs, which are nothing compared to H-bombs) and the accidents from nuclear powerplants is enough to scare anyone.
If a nuclear war between the U.S. and North Korea did come to pass, what cities do you think they would target? The most populated ones. Just like 9/11, New York City would be preyed on. LA is largely populated as well. And of course, Washington D.C. I live on the East Coast. There are two main cities on the East Coast. Nuclear weapons are powerful enough that they could wipe out area surrounding these cities. How far, I'm not sure, but in my mind there is the possibility that at least nuclear waste could reach where I am.
My Mom and Dad (especially my Dad) always said that I'm very lucky to live where I live. In a decent neighborhood in the suburbs of the United States. We're a free country, where equality of race and gender is clearly exhibited in our government officials. We have our first black President, and for the past several years we have had a female Secretary of State (Rice before, now Clinton). I didn't have to worry about growing up in a city full of violence where I would be inferior because of my age and gender, like in the Middle East, nor did I have to worry about extreme violence right outside of my home. Sure, there is violence around me but I am not living in the inner-city districts where nightly shootings are a regular thing.
Now...I'm not so sure. We showed vulnerability in the 9/11 attacks, but our security has tightened since then.
The fact is, however, that no one in the whole entire world, no matter who you are, what you do, race, gender, age, religion, whatever social category you give yourself, it doesn't matter! Bceause NO ONE in the world is truly safe. You can never walk outside your house again and you still aren't safe.
And it's scary.
Especially to Americans who have been so priveleged to live a comfortable life. Because once you look outside your own little bubble, you realize how screwed up the world is and how unsafe you really are. It makes you want to personally walk into the problemed parts of the world and forcibly shake some sense and your values on them. But things aren't fixed so easily.
Maybe I'm overreacting to the threats, but I think it puts things in perspective. It's important to not be so ignorant of what is going on outside your little bubble, and it's also important to not take your safety for granted. Relish in it, and enjoy it while all your priveleges last.
No matter what happens, I'm proud to be an American. We won't put up with North Korea's shit. They don't have the right to think they're so special that they can't obey the rules like the rest of the nations. And we'll go down fighting to stop any other nation from threatening the safety of innocent people across the world. We may have done some not-so-admirable things in the past, but we don't take nukes for granted.
So I'm going to go on living my life to the fullest and wait to see what happens next...

PS Listen to the song I'm listening to. It kicks ass - great guitar, lyrics, and a powerful message, especially right now.

It was bad though, after reading the book Night by Elie Wiesel (spell check? lol) I got really scared. Cause the holocaust was definetely NOT expected in any way. Then it became something so horrible. So you never know...

I know! I read that book this year and it was so moving I nearly cried. It really does put things in perspective.

A:Knowing me, the human killed in the 1st 5 mins.
I had to re-read it this year but when I read it Freshman year it really showed that people can be happy and think everythings all right and it be taken away instantly. I mean now, it would be especially difficult to pull stuff like that but still. You never know whats going to happen.
